About Eric
Eric Kukula is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Industrial Technology. He has been involved with biometrics for over
5 years and has conducted research and/or managed studies in the following areas:
• 2D and 3D face recognition studies.
• A team of 7 that implemented hand geometry at the Purdue Recreational Sports Center and tested over 300 participants.
• Two 200 person technology/scenario tests involving hand geometry leading a team of 7 researchers.
• Two scenario tests involving fingerprint recognition.
• Usability evaluations on fingerprint and hand geometry, leading to his dissertation research.
Eric has also been involved with biometrics standards for over
3 years, participating as a member of INCITS, the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards M1 Biometrics group, as well as a technical expert for ISO/IEC JTC1 SC37 Biometric Working Group’s 2, 3, and 5. Eric is currently a co-editor for an ANSI Technical Report titled Biometric Performance Testing and Reporting - Part 7: Framework for Testing Methodologies for Specific
Modalities.
He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Technology with specialization in Computational Science at Purdue University. His research involves the HBSI – Human Biometric Sensor Interaction, specifically incorporating ergonomic and usability principles into biometric systems to address how users interact with the device and evaluate the impact on performance. Eric has a Master of Science degree in Technology with specialization in Information Security from Purdue's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS), and a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Distribution. He is a student member of the following organizations:
• Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE),
• Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), and
• National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT).
Eric is currently a graduate teaching fellow in K-12 education through a program run by Purdue's Discovery Learning Center in Discovery Park which is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). During the 2007-08 academic year, Eric will be a visiting scientist at Lafayette Tecumseh Junior High
integrating his research into an 8th grade classroom. Over the past three years he has been the recipient of the following grants and awards:
