About Shimon
Shimon Modi is a member of the Biometric Standards, Performance and Assurance Laboratory in the Department of Industrial Technology, and has been involved in biometrics for over three years. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Technology and a Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics at Purdue University. He has a Master's degree in Technology with specialization in Information Security at Purdue's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS), and a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Purdue University.
Mr. Modi is actively involved in biometric standards, both at the national and international level. Mr. Modi represents Purdue University as a voting member on INCITS M1 Biometrics standards committee. He also serves as a technical expert on the US national body for the WG3 Data Interchange Formats working group within the ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC37 committee on Biometrics.
Mr. Modi’s research interests reside in application of biometric systems in e-authentication, statistical analysis of performance of biometric systems, interoperability of biometrics systems, enterprise level information security, and standards development. Mr. Modi conducted his Master’s thesis in feasibility testing of using keystroke dynamics for spontaneous password verification. Mr. Modi has co-written and contributed to 3 published books, published 6 conference proceedings, and been involved in developing a graduate level course targeted at security professionals.
Biometrics Standards Activities
Current Research Interests
Previous Research Projects
- Biometrics in the Manufacturing Enviornment
- Equine Iris Recognition
Collaborative research examining equine eye features for recognition. Extracting equine eye features, development of classification algorithms, and feasibility testing are the main research goals.
- Biometric Storage/Matching Architecture Security
This research was conducted for NIST and involved examination of architecture and interoperability of current biometric systems. The research also analyzed the current methodologies for revocation of a compromised biometric identifier.
Work Experience
US Biometrics - Biometrics Research Intern. Designed and analyzed performance tests for biometric system interoperability. The tests focused on integrating a different accquisition subsytem into the existing security infrastructure. Also responsible for requirements analysis for creating standards compliant physical access and logical access biometrics system. Standards included FIPS-201, BioAPI, and INCITS 378-2004.
