Biometric Standards ParticipationOur group has been involved in the development of national biometric standards in the U.S. since the inception of INCITS M1 Biometrics committee. Since February 2004, our group has participated in the progression ofinternational standards of biometrics through the ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 37 Biometrics group. The Biometric Standards, Performance, and Assurance Laboratory is also a member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The group has a number of graduate students actively working in the national standards community. Eric Kukula is working on a technical report on multimodal biometric within M1.2 which will help practitioners understand multimodal biometrics and how such systems might be used. Eric also sits on M1.5 (Biometric Testing) as a technical contributor. Matthew Young is working on Biometrics and E-Authentication within M1.4 (Biometric Profiles) and is project editor for a technical study report on the use of biometrics for remote e-authentication. This project is in response to NIST SP800-63 Technical Guidance to Federal Agencies implementing electronic authentication. Within M1.2 (Biometric Interfaces), participates as a techical contributor to the newly chartered Biometric Identity Assurance Services project (BIAS). Shimon Modi is also working on the BIAS project. Shimon also sits on M1.3 (Data Formats) on image quality. Dr. Elliott sits on M1.5 as project editor of INCITS 1602-D Part 5: Framework for Testing and Evaluation of Biometric Devices for Access Control. Within the international standards arena, the group is also active. Since February 2004, the lab has participated in SC37 meetings in Australia, South Korea, France, South Africa, and Japan. Graduate students also participate in these activities, including Eric Kukula who sits on WG5 and Shimon Modi who sits on WG3 and WG4.
